From the window in my room I see my city, Porto. Sometimes I jump to the balcony, open my arms and the world gets bigger, my legs get bigger, my nose gets bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and bigger … everything gets bigger! But the things I care the most, those, they stay small. My soccer playing pants, my friendly jacket that embraced me on my first day of school, my warm sweater from the winter days, my summer shorts…
Everyone tells me how much I’ve grown up, and that it’s very good, but I can’t find that good side. I don’t want to grow up, I don’t want to, I’m scared that this body wants to be bigger than my will to be little. Than playing in the dirt, with the ducks on the park, let myself get soaked in the first drops of rain, jump with my boots into the puddles. I want to always stay there, little like a tree with very deep roots. And tell everyone, I won’t go anywhere!
And there I was, one day, lost in my thoughts when I hear a voice behind me.
- Hello Boy.
- Who are you?
- My name is Andorine.
- And where are you from?
- I was born in the Clerigos Tower, and then I grew up and I couldn’t leave this city.
- And weren’t you afraid to grow? I don’t want to grow!
- Growing is a good thing. You will reach things you didn’t reach before. You will find friends you didn’t know. And your jacket will remain special, it won’t take you just to school but to places you’ve never dreamed about. You can keep playing, and running, and jumping into puddles, or you can invent new plays.
You can go where your imagination takes you and you will live many adventures. Don’t be afraid of feeling your legs getting bigger than the rest of your body and of your hugs reaching the top of the mountain. One day you will look back and you will see that wasn’t so hard, because you were never alone. Do you want to try and conquer your fear? Jump on my wings and together we will live adventures on end.
- Where are we going?
- To the other side of the world, to Japan. And if we leave now we can still see the sun rising…
